DOD Board Meeting Minutes

Wetlands Brewpub and Sports Grill, 922 Garfield St Eugene

Oct 13, 2025
Commenced 6:37pm

1. Public Forum:

Jack: Still plugging along Diamond View course at Oakridge. We got voted into the Oakridge community festival – we all purchase insurance together. There will be a non-profit “club” just for the Diamond View project. We have a GoFundMe going for it. Buzzard Butte at Pacific City/TORTA is doing a huge amount of trail building there – high end trails. Oct. 25th is the grand opening. Brandon Semenek will have a signature line there, Carson Storch is involved. System has 2000' of decent. Hand built, machine built, adaptive trails, shuttle road. Beginner trail is built, climbing trail is built, one blue one black and maybe one green will be open. I've been going to the Oakridge trail planning as well. In late winter/early spring, I'd like to do some work on The Gift.

North Shore zone leader report Danny R - Austin reporting on his behalf: Work occurring on North Shore. There's a plan to winch out big tractor tires at the trail – might need the Army Corps to help. Sean: USFS says it's ok to do trail work but only through Cascade Volunteers.

2. Position reports:
A. Chair (Sean Fitzpatrick): Mike Sheppard stepped down as trail manager. Working through zone leader model, likely fill position in the spring. Talked to Kevin about getting back into the Westfir zone. Eagles, Hardesty, South Willamette Trail – he said Trans is focusing on
Lawler but we may end up with Lawler. Logging out in spring, brushing, clearly drains. I rode Hardesty recently. Great American Outdoor Act has grant money – DOD might be able to get in on that money if we want to hire a trail crew for next year. Ben and I did a site tour with Eugene Parks Foundation – but we looked at a green flow trail – similar to Alsea Falls. They will be short on money by quite a lot for the project. Looking to do a community fundraising campaign but they need $400k. Eugene Parks Foundation fundraises with donors but we should likely not get involved with the fundraising aspect. I met with the mayor – talked about the future of mountain biking in the area. She was excited about the prospect of more trails in our area. Thurston dig days coming up. I got a call from a guy from City of Veneta (Kevin Urban) – they're working on wetland restoration project – 2-3 acres of restoration. He wants to build a mountain bike skills park there – he's applying for a grant. Thurston Hills is closing on Friday.

B. Vice Chair (Austin Larson): We should look at how Team Dirt is looking to join NW Trail Alliance in order to have access to paid staff to handle club tasks. COTA/NWTA/OTA has paid staff. We should look at our organizational structure and maybe some type of paid person to
do the work due to the number of land managers. Ben H: I'm not sure we need a paid position when our local land managers are able to secure grant money that still builds trails in our area. Sean: NWTA has only one paid position. COTA has three. Team Dirt may be staying with IMBA instead of joining NWTA. Also I intend on doing a Tuesday night meeting –maybe double pipe dream loops? Jennifer offered to help lead Tuesday night rides at Ridgeline.
C. Treasurer (Chantal Angot): Still cleaning up our accounts – can't seem to get into GoDaddy. We had a BLM workday at Whypass – 5 participants plus DOD. BLM furloughed workers showed up on their own time. I got a copy of the permit we need for ACM. BLM asked us if
we want money. Jack H: Zach and I have some ideas on how to spend money at Whypass.
Sean: We just have to make sure vendors offer the 3% to the BLM. I'd like to get a Whypass work day scheduled – let's go with Nov. 22nd. Ben: Invite UO bike team – they were interested in helping on a dig day. Thanksgiving ride on Wednesday, Nov. 26th
.
D. Secretary (Jeff Green): No response back from Freehub on film fest. Holiday Lights Ride. Dec. 17th
.
E. Trail Work (Vacant):
F. PR/Marketing (Ben Hansen): We dug a bit at Baby Steps/Moon Mtn. I've been working on digital membership cards. Board approved the final edit – Ben to send them out to current members. Members can screen shot the certificate for proof of coverage.

G. Rides/Events (Brian Peas): Last Taco Tuesday was the last one for the year. Holiday Lights Ride and Turkey Ride is on the calendar. Let's put together a social ride after Barbie Camp at Oakshire or The Wheel Apizza Pub. Carley is doing a virtual Taco Tuesday. Next Happy Ride is
likely North Shore or Whypass due to winter conditions. There is a campground being built  at Whiskey Run. It should be open by the time of the races next summer.
