Trail Work, Middle Fork Ranger District, 2007

The schedule for this year's trail work in the Middle Fork ranger district of the Willamette National Forest has been decided. We will be working on forest service trails in the Oakridge vicinity, clearing brush and fallen trees, and improving tread. We will be partnering with the Cascade Creampuff 100 X-men (many of whom are DOD members) to clear trails for the benefit of the various trail users who enjoy Oakridge's great trail network. We invite other groups to join us, be they cyclists, hikers, horse riders, or motorcyclists.

This year's dates are as follows:

Sunday March 18, 2007

Saturday April 14, 2007
Sunday April 15, 2007

Saturday May 12, 2007
Sunday May 13, 2007

Sunday March 18 is the 1st official trail day. Saturday the 17th is PUMP's Scapoose St Patty's ride so go enjoy riding some new trails near P-town on Saturday, and then do some trail work in Oakridge on Sunday. If you don't plan to attend the Scapoose ride, there will be people doing trail work in Oakridge on Saturday also, so feel free to join them.

Saturday and Sunday April 14-15th. 1st full trail work weekend. Come and camp out for the weekend at the DOD's private campground, Randyland. We'll be gathering for dinner and drinks at the Trailhead Cafe on Saturday evening to celebrate the hard work, and plan for summer rides.

Saturday and Sunday May 12-13. Snow levels should be high enough that we can start clearing the high country trails, and start brushing the low elevation trails. The weather should be nice, and we may plan on riding after trail work. We also will have the option of camping at Randyland again, with the evening's entertainment still to be decided.

May 19-20 the Forest Service is offering a volunteer training weekend which includes basic and advanced trail maintenance classes, as well as First Aid/CPR, chainsaw re-certification, and others. It's free, and they are hosting a Saturday dinner and party also. There will be various user groups there, and we feel it's important to have alot of MTB riders attend to remind everyone that we are dedicated to volunteer trailwork. It will also be a good chance to meet the forest service employees, and other users, like horse riders and hikers.

There will be other opportunities for trail work for anyone who can't get enough. For people who work weekends, get in touch with me and I can set you up with others that do weekday trail work.

As everyone should already know, the DOD, and other MTB riders locally do the bulk of volunteer trail work on the Willamette National Forest. The Forest Service recognizes this fact, and they appreciate us greatly. We work hard to ensure the trails are in good shape for our enjoyment, and also for the benefit of the entire trail recreation community. This level of dedication helps ensure that we will continue to have access to all the great trails around Oakridge. Having lived in California, I know what it's like to see areas closed to bikes, and it hurts. If you enjoy the local trails, take a day or two to give back to them. Many people really enjoy trailwork. It's a great way to meet other local riders, find the trails, and earn some karma.

As these dates get closer, we will posting reminders, but I wanted to get them out early enough so folks can put them on their calendar before it starts filling up with plans.

Thanks, Matt

Spring Barbie Camp 2007

That's right, it's getting close to BC time again. Daylight savings has moved back, but we're staying put! I'll have the exact dates and details up here soon.

Downieville Gathering 2007

Finally, a mountain bike gathering will happen near Downieville,
California the weekend of June 8-10, 2007. This event is still in the
formative stages so it doesn't even have a name yet, but the notion to
put this event together came about when some high-profile SoCal riders
crashed Barbie Camp last month and enjoyed themselves so much that they
insisted we duplicate the fun on a West Coast scale. I am serving as a
consultant (unpaid, unfortunately). The Downieville event will be an
official MTBR gathering and it looks like it's destined to be big fun.
The SoCal boyz are seeking a beer sponsor now (first things first). More
info to follow; I just wanted to get the date out there so ya'd know ASAP.

DOD - ACM4, 2008, January

The Disciples of Dirt invite you to join them for their annual All Comer's Meat in their secret singletrack sanctuary known as Whypass. Bring your knobbiest knobbies and be sure to fender your sled for this relaxed-paced event. Plan on about 15 miles of mucky singletrack including ~2500' of climbing. Meet at 10am at the Lorane Country Cafe (the cafe is closed but the parking lot still makes a good place to meet). Find the cafe 1/2 mile north of the town of Lorane on Territorial Highway. Directions: From Eugene, take West 11th Ave. to Bertelsen Rd. There’s a traffic light at the intersection of W. 11th and Bertelsen in west Eugene. Turn south onto Bertelsen and reset your odometer to zero as you do so. Even though you’ll make no turns off this road for about twelve and a half miles, the road’s name will change from Bertelsen to Bailey Hill to Lorane Hwy. Don’t worry about it, just keep driving and make no turns. At 12.6 miles you come to Gillespie Corners. This is where Lorane Hwy. T-bones into Territorial Hwy. Turn left onto Territorial Hwy. (follow signs directing you toward the town of Lorane.) At 17.2 miles, turn right into the Lorane Country Cafe parking lot.

If you have questions about the above ride, you can contact us by email if'n ya like.
