Trailwork, 5/21-22
We had another succesful trailwork weekend,
once again improving the local trails for all user groups. Bunchgrass,
Heckletooth, Alpine, and Salmon Creek all got their fair share of
maintenance as we cleared trees, benched trail, worked tread, and
cut brush. -Lou

Goodman
Creek trail work recap -
I’d like to extend a big thanks to
everyone who was able to make it out to the Goodman Trailhead this
weekend and took a turn pushing a heavy wheelbarrow, carrying big
rocks or diggin’ in the mud. It was definitely one of the
more burly work projects I’ve been involved in. I really appreciate
the positive attitudes, high energy and willingness of folks to
share the work load with anyone who showed up that day that also
appreciates trails.
I’d also like to thank everyone who
helped to put the word out, but couldn’t make it themselves.
I figure each person that made it out that day represents a much
larger number of people either couldn’t make it or didn’t
know about the event. And that adds up to a big community of folks
that really care about trails.
I hope to put together a similar event in
the future, please feel free to email me with feedback. Thanks again,
See you on the trails!

Thanks to everyone who came out on Saturday
to help with the Trailwork. We had a good showing, and got some
great work done. It was great for Ryan to put this event together,
and I'm looking forward to the next opportunity to work
with some other user groups to improve our trails. Thanks to REI
for their grant, and for the snacks and water bottles, and thanks
to the NYC members and Americorps team for working so hard and leading
us to accomplish our goals. To think that those guys are at work
5
days a week improving our trails and environment is an incredible
thing. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. Hope everyone had
a
good weekend. Later, Matt

Spring
Barbie Camp 2005
Yea, it was that time of year again! Lots
of fun and good riding was to be had in Central Oregon. An excellent
campsite was set near the Metolious River, right next to one of
the creeks running out of Suttle Lake. I kicked off my riding Friday
with a quick tour around the area and a few miles along Windigo
trail. Saturday brought the good stuff as we hit most of Windigo,
Jack Creek, and then after a drink or two at camp went back out
for some more mileage and scenery along Windigo. Cold creek crossings
and lots of downed trees mixed up the rolling trails for some good
action!! We awoke after Saturday nights festivities and headed back
out in the rain for a loop around Suttle lake, mixed it up with
some snow, and had an excellent ride in the wet, yet mudless terrain.
Friday and Saturday nights never ending campfire had much discussion
about research in many fields:) Plenty of schwag was passed out
and business cards distributed. The primer is set, seeya in October!

Trail
Work Opportunities, achieved, Goodman Creek work went excellent!
This one might be good to follow up with to score (more) brownie points
with the Forest Service. Middle Fork district already loves us, so maybe
something up the Mckenzie or in the Brice Creek Network. Maybe even partner
with another trail user group. I'd be glad to follow up with the forest
service in either of the two areas to see if they already have something
planned.

HOST A TRAILWORK DAY ON JULY 1 - FOREST SERVICE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
The USDA Forest Service will celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 1,
2005. The Forest Service manages 133,000 miles of trail, 155 National
Forests, 20 National Grasslands on 191 million acres of public land in
42 states. The Forest Service has partnered with IMBA since 1988, and
has worked closely with many of our affiliated clubs for more than a decade.
IMBA's Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews, National Mountain Bike Patrols and
dozens of our affiliated clubs regularly volunteer on National Forest
land. The Forest Service understands mountain biking and actively
supports shared-use trails. IMBA encourages our 550 affiliated clubs to
host a trailwork day or patrol event July 1-3 (Friday - Sunday) at their
National Forest or join in existing celebrations to acknowledge all the
great Forest Service singletrack riding we have enjoyed for years.

If you would like mountain bikers to have a voice within the Lane County
parks system, check this out.
Personally, I think it would be fun to ride around Mt. Pisgah, but it's
so close to town it would be over run with riders. I don't think the horsy
and hikey people would appreciate it, either.
Mountain bikers were barely a blip on the radar screen when the plan was
originally produced, so go for it if ya wanna.- Albee

Mission accomplished! Richard
spoke with the REI manager and employees about the DOD andbuilding trials.
They brought up the idea of the DOD having a day where we would have an
information table at REI to hand out pamphlets and educate the public
on trail use and who we are and what we do. Well done Richard!
TOOLKITS MAKE IT EASIER FOR
LOCAL CYCLISTS TO GET DIRTY
At least three times a year, local mountain cyclist and avid outdoor
steward Richard Sweet spends three consecutive days building and maintaining
local trails with fellow members of Disciples of Dirt. This year, his
effort will be magnified with the help of an REI outdoor stewardship toolkit,
presented to Disciples of Dirt, a local grassroots organization that brings
together cyclists for group rides and trail maintenance projects, through
the International Mountain Bicycling Association. REI awarded IMBA 100
toolkits and a $45,000 grant last month for the purpose of building and
maintaining trails. Disciple of Dirt was selected in recognition of its
extensive contribution to local trails. Sweet estimated that members volunteered
3,800 hours last year alone. Media is invited to attend the REI employee
gathering on Saturday, December 11, at 9:45 a.m. where staff will officially
congratulate Richard Sweet and Disciples of Dirt.
REI President and CEO Dennis Madsen said, "IMBA recognizes the need
for educating mountain bikers about the responsible use of our trails
and natural areas, and joins REI in our efforts to promote environmental
stewardship to protect these resources for future generations."
The toolkit contains:• 1 McLeod trail-building tool
• 1 Pulaski trail-building tool
• 1 Brunton clinometer surveying instrument
• 1 IMBA Trail Solutions Book
• 10 pairs of REI/IMBA trail-work gloves
• 10 REI/IMBA trailhead education signs
• 12 REI stewardship volunteer t-shirts
• 300 REI/IMBA Responsible Riding fly
